Xbox Reveal – Numbers, Command Issues, Sports, Guns, Halo TV
GG3 throws in another, tired bunch of words about the Microsoft event that announced the Xbox One. It will try to not discuss the after-event misinformation tirade and just stick to event facts; condensed to micro-points and elongated with some thoughts. Better hope Kinect doesn’t hear it; it’s “alive.... Read More»

Indie Developers Won’t Be Able To Self-Publish Games For The Xbox One
Here we go again. Last week we talked about a few of the things we wanted to see with the new Xbox and one of them was that we wanted indie developers to have an easier time releasing and updating their games. Today, we find out that that’s not going to be the case with the Xbox One, as indie developers won’t be able to self-publish their games on the new console. Shacknews asked Redmond Game Studios and Platforms general manager Matt Booty if indie developers would need to find a publisher for their games and his answer was “as of right now, yes. We intend to continue to court developers in the ways that we have.” He then added “I would also expect that for this new generation, that we’re going to continue to explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content. But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box.” So maybe they’ll find another way for indie developers to get their games into the hands of Xbox One owners down the road, but for now it’s business as usual if you want your game released on the Xbox One. You’ll either need to have Microsoft Studios or a third-party publish your game onto the Xbox Live Marketplace. And we’re not talking about the handful of quality $1 or $2 games from the Xbox Live Indie Games section either, we’re talking about $5-$20 games from independent developers that want to sell their games on their own terms, while still making real money in the process. This is the complete opposite of what Sony are going to do with the PS4, what Valve have been doing with Steam and even what Nintendo are doing with the Wii U. I mean come on, even Nintendo knows what’s up. Indie games may not be the most important thing to every gamer, but with lower price tags and more unique ideas, they are more popular than ever right now. Being able to self-publish is also more popular these days, since the developer can pick the selling price and keep more of the profits to help fund their next game, instead of having to give away a huge chunk to a publisher. With more distribution platforms offering developers the option to self-publish their games, I don’t blame them for skipping the Xbox Live Marketplace and I’m sure Sony, Valve and Nintendo don’t mind either. Since Microsoft are content to stick with their current indie process, this means that Xbox One owners will see less indie games released and will have to go elsewhere for their indie fix. That’s fine for those who own another console or have a decent computer, but it’s one less reason for those who can only afford one or the other to want to pick an Xbox over the competition. I don’t understand why Microsoft would...The post Indie Developers Won’t Be Able To Self-Publish Games For The Xbox One appeared first on .... Read More»
