38 Studios, other developers clarify stance on SOPA

38 Studios founder Curt Schilling has said the firm cannot “in good conscience support” the Stop Online Piracy Act as it is currently written.

Schilling said the studio is a “strong supporter” of copyright and trademark protection, but as it stands now, the firm cannot support the bill until efforts are made to amend the legislation while also maintaining the “freedom and openness” provided by the Internet.

Epic Games announced its stance on the bill earlier in the week, which mirrors 38′s opinion on the matter.

Capcom executive Christian Svensson has also stated that while “the ESA represents us in legislative matters” Capcom has not announced “any stance on our support (or not) for SOPA.”

Meanwhile, Joystiq’s list of ESA members which support and do not support the bill has been updated to include: Nival, Slang, THQ, and Trion Worlds. RPS has updated its list of respondents as well.

You can also check out Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian’s chat with Bloomberg TV below (via GamePolitics), where he discussed the bill stating: “In creating this legislation about something that frankly they don’t understand, Congress is going to obliterate an entire tech industry in the United States as collateral damage.”
