There are still many of us out there who fondly remember the days some 15+ years ago. The days when the words “Sierra On-Line” meant the world. The days when adding “Quest” to the end of a title meant “must-play.” The days when we were introduced to Sam & Max, an evil tentacle, Adrian Ripburger, and other variations of SCUMM.
If you are one of us, there are two things to keep in mind: You are not alone, and you are not forgotten.
Those of us who were there for the adventure genre’s heyday know that it stands at the pinnacle of storytelling in video games. It’s a genre in which flashy explosions and special effects are secondary to character development, plot twists, and riddles. These days, shooting mechanics, physics engines, and polygon counts reign supreme over plot substance. After all, it’s what sells for the most part. But while adventure gaming may not have the draw and exposure of today’s FPS games, and it may not have a consistent home on consoles (save for rare exceptions like Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain), there is good news: Adventure gaming is alive and well.
