CD Projekt Red are the developers behind the highly anticipated Witcher 2 and the upcoming cyberpunk epic Cyberpunk 2077, but they’ve said that if they weren’t financially and creatively independent from any outside publishers or companies they likely wouldn’t be able to make games how they wanted to:
“I believe that if you want to succeed, creative vision has to inform business policy and not the other way around; that’s crucial for us. Sometimes business will decide a company’s creative policy, that’s very bad for a studio.”
- Studio lead Adam Badowski
I wish there was a way to force every developer to think this way, but unfortunately not many of them have that luxury of safety if they break off from bigger publisher support. The question is whether an industry could survive if everyone simply did what they wanted to creatively… It would, at least, make for much more interesting games!
