Google Files Patent Application to Recognize Faces in Youtube Videos

If the idea of a Google “Skynet” that spends its time looking up cat pictures wasn’t impressively freakish (yet adorable) enough, the company has just recently filed for a patent that would allow them to develop facial-recognition technology to be applied to streaming videos.

The technology essentially works like this: using video frames to collect clusters of face recognition information from a given individual, Google could then use that information to identify said individual whenever their face appears in a video, regardless of lighting conditions or angle.

This patent-pending technique could be used to allow people to tag individuals they see in Youtube videos, or to help people spot other individuals and retrieve their details in augmented reality apps.
