Hideki Kamiya Says PlayStation All-Stars Is ‘Just a Rip-Off’

I don’t think there’s doubt in anyone’s mind that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is inspired by Super Smash Bros. Nintendo’s famed fighting franchise has cemented itself as an iconic brand in the genre, and you have to wonder why it took this long for someone else to make something similar. According to Platinum Games designer Hideki Kamiya, though, PlayStation All-Stars is nothing more than a Smash Bros. rip-off.

While answering some fan questions on Twitter, Kamiya expressed his opinions on the upcoming Sony fighter. When asked for his thoughts on PlayStation All-Stars, the designer responded, “No. I don’t like that game.” He then followed that up by tweeting, “I don’t like rip-off. That’s all.”

Fair enough. I mean, Kamiya doesn’t have to like a game just because other people are stoked about it. And there’s no denying that PlayStation All-Stars certainly draws influence from Smash Bros. Some would argue that to call it a rip-off is a bit extreme, while others might agree wholeheartedly with the statement that it is a rip-off.

Personally, I think PlayStation All-Stars is definitely a Smash Bros. copycat, but it’s still a Smash Bros. copycat that I’m actually incredibly interesting in playing and totally excited for. Additionally, despite the fact that it borrows so heavily from Nintendo’s crossover fighter, I think we all need to remember that this is the gaming industry, where so many new franchises are inspired by preexisting franchises.
