We reported earlier last week that Notch had tweeted at Tim Schafer saying that he wanted to “make Psychonauts 2 happen”, and while we haven’t heard anything substantial since then regarding the game’s possible production, an offhand remark from Schafer in a recent interview with digital spy has revealed just how much it may cost to make the sequel.
Based on the production costs of the first game, Schafer said to Notch that it’d probably cost somewhere in the region of “$13 million” to create a sequel, to which Notch apparently replied “Yeah, I can do that.”
Schafer was full of praise for his potential business partner, citing the ridiculous success of Minecraft as inspiring.
“He’s just a regular guy. He didn’t do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it’s a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I’d like to do something with him. And I’d like to make Psychonauts 2.”
Combined with his recent success with Kickstarter, it seems that Schafer is fast becoming a name synonymous with unconventional sources of development money.
