Sega makes “commercial decision” to miss gamescom

Sega’s confirmed in a statment to GI International it’ll sit out gamescom 2012, its second in four years.

The publisher said the remainder of its 2012 lineup wouldn’t benefit from being on show in Cologne this year, but noted it wasn’t going away from the show entirely.

“Sega has made the decision not to attend gamescom this year,” it said. “Gamescom 2011 was a very successful show for us and continues to be the most important European event in the calendar.

“Unfortunately the release timing of our 2012 AAA titles and new projects don’t work with the mid- August scheduling of the show. The decision will not mean that Sega will never attend gamescom in the future, this was simply a commercial decision made for 2012.”

This is the second gamescom Sega has decided to miss after missing the 2010 event, but appeared at the debut event in 2009 and returned in 2011.

The announcement follows a massive restructure from the publisher and the impending departure of Sega West CEO Mike Hayes in the summer.

Gamescom takes place from August 15-19 in Cologne.
