Bioware announced yesterday that their Star Wars MMORPG will have a free-to-play option this fall. The game will also go on sale for $14.99 this month. All current and former subscribers will receive a certain amount of “cartel coins” to spend in the in game store. The coins can also be bought with real world cash.
Free-to-play players will have full access to the story missions and quests, but will have limited access to the rest of the game. If you have not played the story missions in SWTOR your chance will come soon. Subscribed players will still have access to the full game. Bioware also announced that it will be adding new content. The content includes a new operation, warzone, space combat missions, and the HK-51 companion.
The announcement of a free-to-play option for SWTOR comes as no surprise, Due the game recently dipping below 1 million subscribers. The story line of SWTOR was thought of by many as the best part of the game. Now that Bioware will let players experience that for free, I see no reason not to welcome this announcement.
