Overview
Hardware sales have plummeted week on week, down an average of 18 percent. Year on year sales are down on average 20 percent, however the 3DS is up 49 percent. No platforms are up week on week, while the PlayStation 3 and 3DS are up year on year.
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. StarHawk (PS3) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 108,168. Software milestones this week in the top 30: Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) passed the six million mark; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) passed the 14 million mark; Just Dance 3 (Wii) passed the nine million mark; and Mario Kart Wii passed the 32 million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week sales are down across the board. The 3DS is at the top this week with sales of 132,176 units, which is down 54,691 (-29%). The PlayStation 3 is down 17,145 (-12%) to 129,737 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,712 (-2%) to 108,498 units sold. The Wii sold 62,071 units, which is down 16,612 (-21%). The PSP sold 53,641, which is down 15,294 (-22%) compared to last week. The PlayStation Vita is down 10,677 (-18%) to 48,646 units sold. The DS is down 4,247 (-11%) to 35,063 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 121,378 (-1%) to 569,832.
Year on year sales are up for the PlayStation 3 and 3DS, and are down for the Wii, Xbox 360, DS, and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 2,627 (-2%), the Wii is down 23,596 (-28%), and the Xbox 360 is down 34,268 (-24%). The PSP is down 80,083 (-60%) the DS is down 96,893 (-73%) and the 3DS is up 43,688 (49%). Year on year sales are down 139,879 (-20%).
Wii sales are down for one week, PlayStation 3 sales down for two week, and the Xbox 360 down for five weeks. The PlayStation 3 has led every week this year and the Xbox 360 has been in second every week, except for the week ending January 7 where the Wii outsold it. The PlayStation 3 has a 43 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has a 21 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 4 to 1, while the Vita was outsold by the PSP. The PSP has a 60 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 40 percent. The 3DS has a 73 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 27 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are down
Worldwide Software
One game debuted in the top 30 this week. StarHawk (PS3) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 108,168. There are no software milestones this week in the top 30. The game launched in all three major regions worldwide.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Mario Part 9 (Wii) at number two with sales of 69.304. Sniper Elite V2 (X360) is at number three with sales of 68,447. Sniper Elite V2 (PS3) is at number four with sales of 55,491. Prototype 2 (X360) is at number five in its second week with sales of 53.779.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 41,425. Prototype 2 (PS3) is at number seven in its second week with sales of 40,592. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number eight with sales of 40,260. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) is at number nine with sales of 37,410. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 36,714.
Week on week software totals are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with sales of 1.47 million, a decrease of 143,832 (-9%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.32 million games this week, a decrease of 151,308 (-10%). Wii software sales are down 197,558 (-18%) to 897,920. The DS sold 484,051 games, a decrease of 50,738 (-9%). The 3DS sold 292,481 games, which is down 138,283 (-32%). PSP game sales are down 57,163 (-22%) to 206,138 games sold. The Vita sold 89,782 games, a decrease of 28,223 (-24%). Total combined software is down 767,106 (-14%) week on week to 4.76 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation3 and 3DS, and are down for the Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 323,117 (28%), the Wii is down 180,641 (-17%) and the Xbox 360 is down 48,377 (-4%). The DS is down 241,955 (-33%), the PSP is down 95,572 (-32%) and the 3DS is up 171,006 (141%). Total combined software is down 17,360 (0%) games sold year on year.
The PlayStation 3 has sold the most games for a third week in a row, despite sales dropping. It has also lead for six of the last 10 weeks and the Xbox 360 led for the last four weeks. The PlayStation 3 has a 40 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 36 percent, and the Wii with 24 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The DS leads this week and for the seventh time in 10 weeks, while the 3DS lead for three of the other weeks. The DS has a 70 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 30 percent market share. The 3DS has a 77 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 23 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are down.
