Overview
Hardware sales week on week are up for the Xbox 360, 3DS and PlayStation Vita, and are down for the PlayStation 3, Wii, DS and PSP. Overall sales are down five percent week on week. The 3DS is the only platform to be up year on year and even with it being up 49 percent, overall sales are down by 30 percent.
Three games debuted in the top 30 this week. Lollipop (PS3) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 166,464. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number three with sales of 135,639. Software milestones this week in the top 30: Battlefield 3 (X360) passed the six million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Week on week are up for the Xbox 360, 3DS and PlayStation Vita, and are down for the PlayStation 3, Wii, DS and PSP. The 3DS is at the top this week with sales of 143,036 units, which is up 2,823 (2%). The PlayStation 3 is down 1,203 (-1%) to 119,870 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 2,491 (3%) to 90,365 units sold. The PlayStation Vita is up 29,308 (56%) to 81,685 units sold. The Wii sold 48,748 units, which is down 4,678 (-9%). The PSP sold 44,149 which is down 1,335 (-3%) compared to last week. The DS is down 1,418 (-3%) to 39,517 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 25,988 (5%) to 567,370.
Year on year sales are up for the 3DS and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is down 24,924 (-17%), the Wii is down 110,834 (-69%), and the Xbox 360 is down 53,936 (-37%). The PSP is down 81,039 (-65%) the DS is down 98,666 (-71%) and the 3DS is up 47,091 (49%). Year on year sales are down 240,623 (-30%).
The PlayStation 3 has decreased for two weeks, the Wii for one, while the Xbox 360 has increased for one week. The PlayStation 3 has led every week this year and the Xbox 360 has been in second every week, except for the week ending January 7 where the Wii outsold it. The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 35 percent market share; and the Wii has a 19 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 3 to 1, while the Vita outsold the PSP by nearly 2 to 1. The PSP has a 53 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 47 percent. The 3DS has a 64 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 36 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the 3DS, DS and PSP are down.
Worldwide Software
Three games debuted in the top 30 this week. Lollipop (PS3) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 166,464. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number three with sales of 135,639. The game launched worldwide.
Persona 4: The Golden (PSV) debuted at number two with sales of 137,128. The game launched in Japan, and will release in the US on October 30.
Akiba’s Trip Plus (PSP) debuted at number 21 with sales of 29,480. The game launched in Japan, with no release date anywhere else.
Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Diablo III (PC) at number four with sales of 97,261. Gravity Rush (PSV) is at number five with sales of 71,454.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D (3D) is at number six with sales of 66,775. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (X360) is at number seven with sales of 62,312. Max Payne 3 (X360) is at number eight with sales of 46,633. Max Payne 3 (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 40,337. FIFA Soccer 12 (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 39,227.
Week on week software totals are up for the PSP and PlayStation Vita, and are down for the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with sales of 1.43 million, a decrease of 32,928 (-2%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.37 million games this week, a decrease of 12,597 (-1%). Wii software sales are down 44,728 (-5%) to 785,366. The DS sold 468,823 games, a decrease of 7,932 (-2%). The 3DS sold 459,144 games, which is down 34,926 (-9%). PSP game sales are up 30,699 (15%) to 240,176 games sold. The Vita sold 320,062 games, an increase of 186,867 (140%). Total combined software is up 84,445 (2%) week on week to 4.97 million.
Year on year software totals are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 is down 5,634 (-0%), the Wii is down 604,364 (-43%) and the Xbox 360 is down 59,852 (-4%). The DS is down 344,360 (-42%), the PSP is down 177,753 (-43%) and the 3DS is down 69,502 (-16%). Total combined software is down 941,403 (-16%) games sold year on year.
The gap between the software sales of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been within 100,000 of each other since the week of May 19. The PlayStation 3 has lead for seven of the last 10 weeks, while the Xbox 360 led for the other three. The PlayStation 3 has a 40 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 38 percent, and the Wii with 22 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.
The DS has lead for nine out of the last ten weeks. The DS has a 66 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 34 percent market share. The 3DS has a535 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 47 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the DS, PSP and 3DS are down.
